Let Us Remember

Hello!  ¡Hola!  We are now in Lent, which started on Ash Wednesday.  This week I got to impose ashes on over 276 children and adults, which included both members from St. James Episcopal Church and School, in Del Rio, Texas, where I'm the Rector.  The imposition of ashes serves as a reminder of our mortality; an invitation to reflect on our relationship with God and our neighbors; and preparation on our journey to Life Everlasting.

For my first project, I have a card that was inspired by my love of Japanese Art, which emphasizes elegance through harmony, balance, and simplicity.  For my card, I used Sizzix's Ikebana by Pete Hughes & Handwritten Love by Tim Holtz Thinlits sets; Spellbinders Painted Blooms cutting dies; Baofali 3D Clouds embossing folder; a paper cutter; and an Arteza black marker.  I'm submitting it to TCC #224 {Monochromatic Greens}AAA #308 Sketch, and As You Like It Challenge - Elegant (and why).
Next, I have a spread in my old K&Company Smash book that I am VERY slowly working on.  It features pics and memorabilia from the Summer of 2017.  I used a birthday card I made for my wife, a pair of Matchbooks I made to document different events, an envelope enclosing letters related to my admission into the Seminary, photos, word stickers, and more.  It was fascinating going back memory lane.  I am submitting this spread to Lasting Memories - The Power of WordsArt Journal Journey - Anywhere, Any Place, With Anyone, and  Friday Face Off.
This is a photo of St. Andrew's Episcopal Church, in Brackettville, Texas.  I serve the congregation as a supply priest, since they lost their priest a couple of years ago, and have not found a replacement.  They're a small congregation, but lovingly serve the Lord in their community and beyond.  I felt this verse from 2 Corinthians 4:17, conveyed how their present "affliction" is "momentary," compared to the eternal glory that awaits them as believers.  I am submitting this to Word Art Wednesday - Weeks #740-41, What's On your Workdesk? Wednesday 872/92, and Path of Positivity #138.

In closing, I want to leave you with an excerpt from my sermon for Ash Wednesday, based on Matthew 6:1-6,16-21:

If we forget our mortality, we have no need for God, our salvation, and life everlasting.  We forget about what the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ means to those who follow him.  Forgetting, makes us vulnerable to being contaminated by sin, infected by the ways of the world, and distorted into a false relationship with God, ourselves, and our neighbors.  So let us remember why we're being marked with the ashes of mortality.  Let us remember whom God created us to be.  Let us remember to follow the way of the Lord, live humbly serving others, and let our lives reflect Jesus’ teachings.

Thanks for visiting!  ¡Gracias por su visita!  Shalom!

Very cool take on our sketch! love the colors you've chosen. Thank you for playing at the AAA Cards Challenges
Your Japanese styled card is really lovely. I especially like how you framed it with that colorful doll. The red and green in the doll makes your card stand out and the images pop. and it's fun to go back into older journals, isn't it? That memory lane trip helps remind us of things that were not only important, but give a timeline to see where we have come to today. Thanks for sharing this with us and joining Elizabeth over at AJJ also. hugs-Erika

...I love the first image, "forever!"
Beautiful work, particularly your elegant Ikebana collage (presumably to mark the Lunar New Year?) -- just gorgeous! I love the Japanese aesthetic in art too.
Beautiful words and thought Arnoldo. Loving the card and the journal pages and the photo of the church is lovely too. Pleased you like the pop-up card, I'm doing a few as samples for a class I do at the local craft club and there will be instructions to follow soon if you are interested which I'll put on my blog. I know your time is limited but this is one of the simplest pop-ups I've done so you might like it. Take care and happy woyww, Angela x9x
Favorite is the Japanese art ~ and wonderful journal ~ hugs

I really enjoyed seeing how your love for Japanese art came through in the card design. The simplicity and balance speak for themselves. And that Smash book spread? What a treasure. Going back through old memories like that always stirs something in the heart. It’s beautiful that you’ve preserved those milestones so thoughtfully. St. Andrew’s looks so peaceful as well. Small congregations often carry such quiet strength.

I just shared the first post for the Movement Link-Up and you can start entering from today:

I can’t wait for you to share your post and link up so we can all read each other’s posts and keep moving together.

Such a beautiful photograph of the church. The composition cries out for a lovely sentiment and you have obliged with a positive verse... and your talents to their congregation! Hola Arnoldo, your card at the top is so beautiful, I like it a lot. The spread in your smash book looks gorgeous as well - I've never done a smash book and am not quite sure what exactly it is. What is a supply priest? Is it like a substitute teacher who takes over a class when the regular teacher can't do it? This is how I understand what you wrote.

This is a beautiful post. I too love all things Japanese and this card is a fine tribute. All of your cards are so thoughtful and pretty. This is a rare talent and I'm so glad you share it with FFO. Have a wonderful weekend. Also, thank you for the prayers.
Hi Debra! No, I'm respectful and enjoy attending all cultural celebrations, but did not have the Lunar New Year in mind when I made my card. I just love Japanese Art.
Hi Carola! Smash books are a blend between a scrapbook and a junk journal. They were popular at least 10 years ago, but I never finished filling the pages in mine. I recently started working on mine again. It's a slow process for me, so it's going to take me a while to finish it. As to a supply priest, it is the equivalent of a substitute teacher. Hence, I celebrate the Eucharist with them twice a month, and I'm available for sacraments such as Baptisms. I also provide them with pastoral care when needed. However, I don't have a vote in any of their Vestry endeavors. (That's the church's governing body.) They respond directly to our Diocesan Bishop. Thanks for visiting!
I do like your Japanese art.
A very nice photograph of St. Andrews Episcopal Church.
Thank you for including words from your Ash Wednesday sermon.

My good wishes.

All the best Jan

Reverend Arnoldo, I love all of your creations. You did a great job on the card that reflects your love of Japanese art. I enjoyed reading about the small congregation that you serve, and I loved seeing the picture of their church. Your smash book is amazing too. When I did more scrapbooking, it took me several years to get caught up. I also found it very interesting to realize that the ashes for Ash Wednesday were meant to remind us of our mortality. I am new to a more traditional faith, and wasn’t able to make it to church on Ash Wednesday, but next year, I’ll know all about it! Thanks so much for sharing your wonderful talents with us at Word art Wednesday. We always appreciate seeing the wonderful things that you make!

That's a lovely card, Arnoldo! It's hard to do simple cards well, and you've done a wonderful job. Your smash book looks great too--even if it takes a while, it'll be a lovely home for your cherished memories. Have a blessed Lent. -Anita

Your cards are especially beautiful and very thoughtful and personal. I especially love the first but oh, to be your wife and receive such a special card from you!
It is clear that your art work comes from the heart and your sermon carries more meaning today when cruelty and power are being thrust on our population. Thank you for this kind reminder that that following the way of the Lord will teach us to show kindness to all who are suffering in these times.

Beautiful elegant card and a great scrapbook page. I keep thinking of “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness"
2 Corinthians 12:9 , but I am praying God will take this pain away. Angela #12

Boa noite Reverendo Arnold.

Arnoldo, your card is a perfect representation of both challenges. I love the simplicity of Japanese art and your creation captures it beautifully. The soft pastel colors with a hint of brown work beautifully. Your art journal is full of wonderful memories, texture and color.

This is wonderful, Arnoldo. Thanks so much for sharing your art and your words of wisdom with us all. Over the years, I've encountered far too many people who observe Ash Wednesday as some sort of commitment as opposed to actually understanding WHAT they're doing and WHY they're doing it. When religion becomes a practice and not a personal experience, it loses its beauty and meaning. I greatly appreciate you sharing the excerpt from your sermon. I pray that those receiving it were able to experience and appreciate what it means and reflect on it as they'd see it on their face. I guess what I'm saying is that I praise God for you, Arnoldo, as you boldly share the truth of Jesus Christ to those He entrusted to you. I will continue to pray that God will use you and bless you. Thank you for sharing your art, talents and fellowship with us at Word Art Wednesday.
P.S. I was just in the WAW Blog publishing comments. Thank you so much for your encouraging comment. However, I accidentally hit the wrong button (because I wasn't paying proper attention to what I was doing) and I deleted your sweet comment. Please know that it wasn't intentional, and that your art and your comments are always a blessing to me. That's what I get for trying to multi-task. lol
