We're All Blessed!

Hello!  ¡Hola!  My wife and I had a wonderful weekend, as both our daughters and our grandsons were in town.

For my first project, I have an art journal page.  I started by collaging my background with scraps of paper in autumn colors.  Then, I used an old Tim Holtz Gothic stencil and applied Spiced Marmalade Distress Ink sparingly over the background.  For my focal point, I used a Scrappy Tails Books & Coffee dies set and an old Martha Stewart Classic Photo Label.  I finished off my page by hand-lettering a J.R.R. Tolkien quote, from his book, "The Fellowship Of The Ring".  I'm submitting this to Art Journal Journey - Colors of Autumn by Wendy K, Inspiration Station Challenge November 2026 - Inspiration Photo #91, and The Neglected Stuff Challenge November 2026.

Día de los Muertos is a day of remembrance for the faithfully departed, which is observed by Mexican families and others, on November 1-2.  In combination with our All Saints Day feast, I put up an Altar of Remembrance (Altar de Muertos) in our nave.  I had my congregation bring pictures of their loved ones last week, and I assembled them along with ofrendas, which included a cross, icons, holy water, holy oils, votive candles, incense, salt, wine, ceramic sugar skull figures, papel picado and paper marigolds.  After saying some prayers from the Book of Common Prayer's Burial service, we played Taizé music while I read the necrology, and each family came up to light a votive candle at the altar.  I am submitting this to Colorful Options November 2026 - Día de los Muertos,  T Stands for Tuesday - November 3, 2026, and What's On your Workdesk? Wednesday 909.

These last photos are my this, that, and the other.  The 1st picture is of the Jack-o-lanterns that my oldest daughter and I made for the boys.  I carved the top one and my daughter the bottom one.  The 2nd picture is of my grandsons when we took them trick-or-treating.  They were dressed as a Black Spider and Miguel Rivera from the movie Coco.  They had a blast sorting through their treats, while they rode in a wagon between the houses we stopped at.  (We've had that wagon since my daughters were their age!)  The 3rd picture is of a Western Spotted Orbweaver Spider on one of my wife's cherry tomato plants.

In closing, I'd like to leave you with a summary of my sermon for All Saints Day:

When we think of Blessings, we often think of a special gift or reward from God, such as a good family, health, or wealth.  However, blessed has a much broader and deeper meaning.  Blessedness is all-inclusive, so we don't earn or deserve it, as we were all blessed by our creator.  The problem is that we don't all recognize our blessedness, so we seek worldly greatness.  When we recognize that we're blessed, we live in a particular way to love, honor, and serve God.  That's what the Beatitudes are all about, which means Christians are to live in humility and dependence of God; recognize their sinfulness; live meekly; seek social justice for all their neighbors; demonstrate compassion and forgiveness towards others; live with integrity; seek peace amongst all people; bear suffering from the world because of their loyalty to God; and always rejoice for their reward is in Heaven.  Therefore, the Beatitudes describe the natural fruit and internal transformation produced by the Spirit in true disciples.  Some examples of people that have recognized their blessedness and lived accordingly include St. Mary Mother of God, St. Francis of Assisi, and St. Óscar Romero.  So on this All Saints Day, let us recognize our blessedness and vow to live by the Beatitudes, our blueprint for holiness.

Thanks for visiting!  ¡Gracias por visitarme!  Please leave a comment, and I'll be glad to reciprocate, so that we can get to know each other.

Shalom,

Arnoldo+

  4. Thank you for sharing your All Saints Day. I love Taizé chants. My husband and I visited Taizé in 1992. Thousands of young people. It was so good to see. And we chanted for hours.
    Happy T-Day,

  6. You Tolkien quote page is beautiful, and that is a super quote for autumn. Thanks for joining AJJ and Wendy's challenge. I also love the Day of the Dead remembrance alter. That is a great idea, and it looks beautiful. Up here in New England with our puritanical background you don't see anything like that. But it is nice to remember those who shaped us and have now passed. And I bet you were thrilled to see your grandsons and daughters too. What a fun weekend you must have had. Have a super T day.

  7. This is a beautiful post. The Tolkien art piece is very nice. I love that you make an Altar of Remembrance for your congregation. I know they appreciate it very much. The photo of the pumpkins is very dramatic and I love it. Your grandkids are too cute and what a fun way to take them Trick or Treating. That spider is actually very beautiful. Thank you for sharing this with FFO and have a great week.

  8. What a gorgeous page with that wonderful quote. Loved the photo of your two grandsons. That is a superb photo of the spider even though I dislike spiders, too many legs and they move too quickly.
Thank you so much for sharing with us on AJJ for my Autumn colour theme. Wendy K

  11. What an amazing journal page you created. I also love the J.R.R. Tolkien quote, too. This is a wonderful entry for Wendy's theme at AJJ. Thanks for sharing it.

What a beautiful Altar of Remembrance for Dia de los Muertos. I love the paper cuttings and that gorgeous crouched covering. And what a wonderful way to connect to T Stands For Tuesday, too. Thanks for sharing.

You and your daughter carved two amazing pumpkins. Those boys must have had fun trick or treating. I loved the spider on your grandson, but not on the tomato. And for later this week, happy FFO and AFFF.

  12. I reckon I said it before, I just do it again! I like how you not mourn but celebrate your loved ones who had to leave.
After my Mom´s funeral we went to a restaurant and laughed a lot about how funny she was - that was healing! That was good.
And just the other night I dreamed about her and she laughed her sweet laugh (she passed 2011).

  20. Dear Arnoldo, I’m so glad that you and your wife had such a wonderful weekend with your grandchildren and daughters! And you were very creative once again—not just with that fantastic Tolkien page, but also with the pumpkin heads you carved together with your daughter; they turned out really well.
I believe that anyone who feels grateful for what makes up their life is truly blessed. I’m not a religious person, but I am full of gratitude because I get to live such a beautiful life.
All the best from Austria 🤗

  25. ¡Hola, Arnoldo! Setting up the Altar de Muertos in the nave with the photos, marigolds, and votives was a breathtaking pastoral touch for your parish. Between pumpkin carving with your daughter, trick-or-treating with the boys, and your craft challenges, what a rich, love-filled week. Blessings and shalom to you and your beautiful family!

  28. Bom diz Reverendo Arnold.

  30. The best gift ever is the time spent with family, all at the same time/same place. This is what makes the holiday's so special for me!
Your art is beautiful as always.
Loved your sermon summary. Thanks for the reminder.
    All the best.

  31. As a LOTR fan I of course like your journal page. But what really speaks to me is the altar you made for your congregation for Día de los Muertos. Back home in Germany we have All Saints' Day and candles in usually red containers are put on the graves. It's lovely to walk around a cemetery at dusk. Seeing your grandsons is always wonderful!
