Coined in God's Image Through Baptism
Hello! ¡Hola! I didn't have much time to work on art this past week, but it was filled with blessings. Half the week, I was in San Antonio, Texas, as I serve on the Episcopal Diocese of West Texas' Latino Ministries, and we hosted an event. I also celebrated a Baptism at my church on Sunday, so that involved extra planning. God is good!
Inspired by the Autumn celebration of remembrance of El Día de los Muertos, with its colors, flowers, and symbolism, I designed this ATC. I used the Spellbinders Dancing Girl Day of the Dead dies set; a Sizzix Tim Holtz Gift Tags Thinlits; and a KSCraft ATC Cards die. I used a Copic Fine Nib Inking Pen to write a quote by Mexican comedian and ventriloquist, Johnny Welch, in Spanish. It translates to - "Death does not come with old age, it comes with oblivion." I am submitting this to The Card Concept #230 {Fall Harvest}, Beautiful Blossoms - Mood Board #46, and The Dream Factory Challenge #155.

The pictures above are my this, that and the other for last week:
1- This is a camping canteen I personalized with die-cut permanent adhesive vinyl letters.
2- These are my parochial school's acolytes and me, before our Chapel service, as St. James Episcopal Church, in Del Rio, Texas, last week.
3- This is a photograph I took during the Latino Ministries workshop, at the Bishop Jones Center, in San Antonio, Texas.
4- These are sculptures of La Virgen de Guadalupe and San Juan Diego, found, at the workshop's conference room.
5- This is a photo I took at La Panaderia, in San Antonio, of a Día de los Muertos Sugar Skull Sculpture.
6- This is the Baptism of Baby Aurora, that I celebrated on Sunday, at my church.
7- These are my cats Gris and Sammy relaxing in my home art-studio/office on Sunday afternoon.
In closing, I have a summary of my sermon for the 21st Sunday after Pentecost:
In today’s Gospel reading, the Judean religious leaders and Herodians are trying to entrap Jesus, by asking, “Is it lawful to pay taxes to the emperor, or not?” This type of Pharisee-Herod conspiracy is still part of our world. It’s played out every time some Christians over-simplify complex issues, make generalizations about groups of people, and manipulate Jesus’ truth. This lack of willingness to listen to, understand, and love others is what’s causing divisions. Jesus refuses to play games. He doesn’t answer their question with a yes or no. Instead he deepens the question and turns it into a question of faith, truth, and life. If the coin belongs to the emperor, then human beings belong to God. Each has been marked with the image of its owner. Christians have been coined in the image of God by the Holy Spirit during Baptism. However, being coined in God’s image, is more than a symbolic act. It takes making changes. In today’s Epistle, Paul tells us that the Thessalonians exemplified the truth of conversion through active faith, deep endurance under all circumstance, and a loving witness to others. Jesus invites us to do the same for ourselves, as we're coined in God’s image through Baptism.

Thank you for always adding your sermon of the week to your posts. I truly appreciate visiting here.

ReplyDeleteI agree with Nicole. This is a wonderful post. I love your latest card too, and thanks for linking that up to Try It On Tuesday. I enjoyed seeing the photos too. That little girl being baptized is very cute. And of course, it is great to see the kitties. I hope you have a wonderful T day and week ahead.
ReplyDeleteI love your card and the explanation with it. It´s what I tell my Nieces - nobody is gone as long as we remember them.
ReplyDeleteOnly wish we could celebrate it like this. But no, we mourn.
Let´s learn from one another, happy T-Day.

ReplyDeleteSo many things to celebrate on your post today! I adore your Day of the Dead artwork and the snuggly cats made me smile! In Wales we would say they’re having a cwtch, that means a hug. (It’s pronounced cootch)

It's always a pleasure to see what you've been up to. You're always so busy but still find time for some crafting. Thanks for the lovely comment over at mine too. Wishing you a very happy woyww. Hugs Angela x7x
ReplyDeleteYour Día de los Muertos ATC is beautiful, and I really liked the quote you included. It sounds like you had a full week with many blessings, from the workshop to the baptism celebration. The photos were wonderful, and the cats were the perfect ending.
ReplyDeleteEven when you are busy you find time to craft - brilliant. Yes the Even So session was the first one to grab me, totally reflected my situation. Strangely the prayer in my head currently is, "Take this cup from me, not my will but yours". Desperately trying to get an answer as to why I am so "obsessed" attempting to get these building companies to play by the rules! Is it pride or perseverance to make things better for everyone? Is it the devil bugging me or God pushing me? So many questions....Hugs Bj#13
ReplyDeleteYour card looks fantastic Arnoldo - I love the artsy feel! Thank you so much for joining us at The Card Concept xx

Hola, dear Arnoldo,
ReplyDeletethe *Día de los Muertos* card immediately reminds me of Frida Kahlo and Niki de Saint Phalle—both of whom I admire greatly, and both of whom often incorporated this kind of symbolism. The purple skull fits right in, too! 😉 I love that you included a fitting quote from a comedian—it’s actually quite wise. It’s so lovely to see the photos of you with little Aurora at her baptism. And, of course, I’m delighted by the photo of your cats, Gris and Sammy, all snuggled up together. I get the impression they’re good friends—is that right?
All the best from Austria, 🤗

Rosetrose, Gris and Sammy have a typical sisters relationship, although they're not biologically related. They love on each other, play, and nap together often. However, for unknown reasons to me, they'll gripe at each other sometimes too.
DeleteAnother wonderful, spirit-filled post, Arnoldo!
ReplyDeleteThe phrase "coined in God's image through Baptism" is magnificent sermon imagery that will stay with me all week. What a joyful celebration for Baby Aurora and her family!
Your Día de los Muertos ATC turned out beautifully—the quote you hand-lettered is deeply poignant, and the paper crafting is top-notch as always.
Blessings on your ongoing work with Latino Ministries and your parish. Give Gris and Sammy a gentle scratch behind the ears for me!
I did enjoy this post, thank you for sharing both your artwork and wonderful photographs.
ReplyDeleteMy good wishes.
All the best Jan
Happy Friday
ReplyDeleteThanks for linking to AFFF

Arnoldo, I like your Día de los Muertos card and am happy that I could actually read it without your translation (I have been learning Spanish for a while). This quote is so true. I remember when I studied in Vienna (decades ago) I read a quote on the Central Cemetery, "dead is only who is forgotten".
ReplyDeleteThe pictures of the baptism of the little girl reminds me of my daughter's baptism. She was wearing the baptism gown that already her grand-grand-grandmother was wearing (and her mother - me!).
Oh your cats - they are so beautiful and it's wonderful how they cuddle up to each other.
Saludos - Carola
Love those statues of Our Lady of Guadalupe and Juan Diego! I did a Full Moon Altar in her honour a couple of years ago --

Love your Day of the Dead ATC and the Sugar Skull Sculpture! I'm happy to see you celebrating the Mexican culture considering where you live and the intense anti-Mexican views of the current government. Have a wonderful week,🍂🙂 Lindart # 15
