T is for Thanksgiving ( ABCW, WOYWW & PPF)

On Thursday, November 24th, many Americans will be celebrating Thanksgiving Day.  However, it has become controversial, due to the abuses and discrimination that Native Americans suffered due to the European settlements all over the American continent.  Although I am primarily of European descent, I have some Mesoamerican ancestry too.  Therefore, I thoroughly relate to the controversy, but honor the holiday as a way of giving thanks for all my blessings.  In that regard, I am thankful for my family, my friends, my home, my pets, my job, my gift of creativity, and above all, for living in a country where I have the freedom to praise my God, who is my creator, savior and redeemer.

S is for Saint - WOYWW - PPF

With the continued political, public and other discord in the United States, I believe prayers for peace, love and reconciliation are necessary.  I also find myself praying that the Lord work through the hearts and minds of all our newly elected officials, so that His will be done, not ours.  However, I like to begin by praying to make me a better person, so at this time the one attributed to Saint Francis of Assisi is one of the best.

R is for Restlessness

I have been fighting a feeling of restlessness these days with our presidential elections here in the USA.  I don't feel comfortable with any of the candidates, which made for the most difficult decision I've ever had to make when voting.  Although I am a very prayerful man, I believe that our flawed human nature can cause anyone to make a wrong decision.  Therefore, I've been praying that the Lord will work through the heart and mind of whomever gets elected, so that His will, not ours, will be done.  I also found the following scriptures very helpful, no matter whom your candidate is:

Q is for Quietness

Relaxing by the swimming pool with my wife, a walk at the park with my camera, working on my artwork, sitting in my favorite seat reading with my dogs by my side, and taking a small break to say a prayer during the day are all quiet moments that I cherish in my life.  They help me stay centered and bring peace into my often hectic life.  As is found in Psalm 23:2-3, during these moments, "He leads me beside quiet waters, he refreshes my soul."  It is during quietness that my strength, physical and spiritual, are regenerated.  Even if I'm not in prayer, I know that the Lord is present in my moments of quietness, so I find comfort, peace and love as well.  These quiet restorative moments aren't always easy to attain, especially when my hectic life is in extreme mode, and I'm too stressed and tired to focus.  This is when I just have to "fake it until I make it," and believe me, it works!

P is for Prayers for Peace

It's been almost a month since my last post, so please accept my apologies.  Between my fast and furious schedule at work this school year, in addition to several personal engagements, I have not had the energy to write a post.  It was so hectic during the past month, that I was only able to create the four projects in this post.

However, I have been keeping up with the tragic state of our national election, as well as all the hatred and violence that's been contaminating our beautiful world.  It breaks my heart and makes me worry about the future of our children.  Therefore, today I want to share two prayers found in the Episcopal Book of Common Prayer, from a series we are following at my church:

L is for Live, Laugh & Love

During my teenage years, I became acquainted with the phrase, "Live, Laugh & Love," through a friend of mine.  I remember hand lettering it into journals and letters to other friends of mine.  I did not know where this simple alliterative phrase came from, but I knew it was powerful.  Later on, I realized they were derived from a poem titled "What Constitutes Success," by Bessie Anderson Stanley, from 1904.  Below is her poem, which I feel is timeless:

J is for Just Do It

Do you ever just do it?  I am very methodical, which makes me a creature of habit, who feels much more comfortable planning every detail of my life.  This stems from my inherent perfectionist tendencies.  However, I sometimes make a conscious effort to go out on a limb and "just do it," and I like it!  It is a freeing feeling to just take a ride to the lake with my wife on the spare of the moment; make an impulse purchase of a new art tool or spiffy shirt; or have a fresh creme filled doughnut every once in a while.  I have learned to "just do it" too, when working on my artistic endeavors.  My perfectionism was so severe during my youth, that it stifled my artistry causing me to have creative blocks.  I still enjoy the comfort of routines, but I feel it's much more healthy to "just do it" sometimes.  What do you think?

H is for Happy

I choose to be happy!  As a recovering perfectionist, it has not always been easy, because I used to focus on an issue's negative point and overlook all the positive ones.  Perfectionism used to stifle my creativity and my ability to have good relationships during my youth.  It helps that overall I am an optimistic person by nature, so I know how to look at the glass half full instead of halfway empty.  I also learned to find the good in all people.  I hate to admit it, but I will avoid pessimistic people, because it is easy to be sucked into their negativity.  However, I will listen to them and help them find the positive in situations if they choose to seek help.  A major influence in my life has been my faith in God, which was instilled in my by my parents at an early age.  I know that I can do anything, if I just stop being afraid and believe in the strength, courage and wisdom that can be found in Him.

E is for Educator

As some of you may know, I am an educator.  I have worked with students 4 to 14 years old for a couple of decades.  I am certified in the State of Texas in various fields, including art, bilingual education, and gifted education.  Although the public education world has become more and more arduous through out the years due to increased local, state and federal stipulations, the monetary compensation has not increased commensurately.

Therefore, putting my girls through college hasn't been financially easy, and the viability of a comfortable retirement is still a ways off.  Although occasionally discouraging, I am still hardworking and have received several awards throughout my career.  Amongst them, I was Teacher of the Year a couple of times, Teacher Mentor of the Year once, and have received a couple of scholarships, which recently helped me earn my public school principal certification.

However, the joy of working with children is the greatest motivator in my career as an educator, not the financial compensation or awards that I have received.  I find my students' continuous sense of curiosity, thirst for knowledge, and innocent loving nature inspirational.  In addition, I find nurturing the latter a creative and problem solving challenge that keeps me wanting to learn and grow more each day to meet my students' individual educational needs.

In the words of my Lord, Savior and Redeemer, Jesus Christ, found in Mark 10:14-16, "Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these.  Truly I tell you, anyone who will not receive the kingdom of God like a little child will never enter it."  Although I cannot bring the Lord's word into my public school classroom, I know I'm doing God's will through my work with the students.

Rather you are an educator in a public, religious, or home school, may you be blessed with strength, patience, and wisdom to be a positive guiding light for the youngsters you are working with.  Thank you for taking the time to leave a thoughtful comment, as well as for following my blog.  Peace!  ¡Paz!  Shalom!

C is for Configuration

According to the Oxford Dictionaries, configuration is an arrangement of elements in a particular form, figure, or combination.  There are several examples of the word's use in sentences, but the one that caught my eye reads, "A friend of mine goes with the theory that there is no self, rather that he is a configuration of infinite diverse elements in a state of constant change."  That is me, a configuration!

This configuration starts with the different roles I play.  I am a family man who loves and respects my wife, as well as my parents and daughters.  I am an educator and artist who takes both professions seriously, and feels I should use them for the welfare of humanity.  Most importantly, I was created in the image of God, as described in Genesis 1:27.  Therefore, I must reflect his love and grace in every configuration I may be in.

Another example of this configuration, is the fact that some people tell me that I don't look "Mexican."  I find this strange, since I was reared in Mexico and my father was Mexican.  This could be due to my Spanish, Greek, and Italian genetic make up.  It could also be due to my level of education and vast cultural exposure.  Therefore, I don't fit the mold some people have in their narrow definition of a "Mexican," since I'm a configuration of a plethora of elements.

Julia's What's On Your Workdesk? Wednesday #373
Another example has to do with my artistic creations.  Although they reflect my love of spirituality, nature, and family, they can be quite diverse in genres and mediums used.  I may choose some abstract or vintage elements, but realism and symbolism are always key elements.  As to mediums, I like photography, water based mediums, pastels, and paper crafts.  All these elements surface into a complex configuration which allow me to express myself.

So indeed, I believe I am "a configuration of infinite diverse elements in a state of constant change" through my life's experiences.  Anyway, I want thank all my followers, as well as everyone who takes the time to leave a comment.  May your life be filled with blessings!

A is for Attempt

In Rev. Marshall A. Jolly’s sermon, Are We Ready to Hear the Truth?, he said, “Christians have become accustomed to being soothed on Sunday morning with a feel-good message that portrays God as little more than a Divine “fixer,” taking our failings and jagged edges, and smoothing them over into something sublime and holy. “God works all things for good,” we say.”  Hence, the popularity of preachers such as Joel Osteen, whom I confess I like to listen to sometimes.  His primary focus is often on passages such as the one we read in Deuteronomy 30:9-14.  I agree, if we turn to the LORD our GOD with all our heart and soul, and we observe his commandments and decrees, abundant prosperity in all our undertakings can be found.  I could write a book on all the blessings that have been bestowed upon me, even when I didn’t feel I deserved them.

However, it is imperative that we also remember Jesus’ words in Luke 10:25-37, about the Good Samaritan.  But, who were the Samaritans?  After a little research, I found that Samaritans were a racially mixed society of Jewish and pagan ancestry.  They worshiped the same God as the Jews, but only accepted the first five books of the Bible as canonical and had their temple on Mount Gerizim instead of Zion.  Because of their differences in Jewish practices and their partly pagan ancestry, they were despised by the Jews.  Samaritans were despised so much, that Jews would not even set foot in their territory in fear of contamination.  In John 8:48, they’re even referred to as demon-possessed.  Doesn’t it sound like what’s happening these days?

Anyway, In the Bible Study: 8 Pentecost, Susan Butterworth reflects, “It’s a rare person who doesn’t know the parable of the Good Samaritan. Unlike some of the parables, the message seems quite clear: Love your neighbor. Anyone in need is your neighbor. It is understood that the Samaritan is an outsider. It is the outsider who shows compassion to the half-dead man by the roadside after the priest and the Levite, members of the community, have crossed to the other side. In the parable, it is the outsider who is the true neighbor because he shows mercy.

Ramona's Inspire Me Monday - Week #236
It is moral and Godly to show mercy and compassion to anyone in need, whether that person is one of your community or an outsider. In our lives, we probably know this. While the parable is about doing what is right – “What must I do to inherit eternal life?” and “Go and do likewise” – there is more to the story than righteous behavior.  In the passage immediately preceding the parable of the Good Samaritan, Jesus says, “Blessed are the eyes that see what you see!” He is talking about faith. The priest and the Levite are in a hurry, on their way to work in the temple. They don’t really see the injured man except as an obstacle in their path. The Samaritan sees and is moved with pity. He sees in a different way, with blessed eyes, with the eyes of faith. Perhaps when Jesus says to the lawyer, “Go and do likewise,” he means see with the eyes of faith.

Take a look at the various characters in the parable, particularly the lawyer, the priest, the Levite and the innkeeper. Think about their lives and their reaction to the events of the story. Put yourself in each character’s place. In what ways are you like each character? How does each one feel and react to the injured man? Would you react the same way?  Think of this parable as a story of ministry and healing.”

Our Beautiful World - Play

Therefore, in today’s society, where the world, our nation and even our families and circle of friends seem to be breaking more and more apart due to partisan, social, cultural, religious, and other points of view, I believe we all need to keep Jesus’ parable regarding the Good Samaritan in our heart, soul, and mind.  In the words of my 20 year old daughter, after the recent shootings in our country, “There should be no argument as to who’s right or wrong.  It all comes down to the same fault: people were killed senselessly.  There are families hurting on both sides due to hate and violence.  My prayer is for Peace in this country.  Gracious, Everlasting, Unifying Peace.”  I wholeheartedly agree, as I feel ashamed of my personal biases.  We need to stop focusing on the negativity we see in the news and social media, and truly love the Lord our God with all our hearts, and with all our soul, and with all our strength, and and with all our mind: and our neighbors (which includes our enemies) as ourselves.  We need thrive to all be one in HIM.  May the peace of the Lord be with us, the nation, and the world.

Y is for Yūgen

As I was searching for a word to use as inspiration for my post this week, I came across the Chinese and Japanese word yūgen.  Being a fan of the Japanese arts, I was naturally drawn to it.  Yūgen is an important concept in Japanese aesthetics.  According to Chinese philosophical texts, it means dim, deep, or mysterious.  However, in Japanese culture, it is used to refer to a profound and mysterious sense of beauty in the universe or the sad beauty of human suffering.  Yūgen is beyond what can be articulated about a special experience or something beautiful in the world.  Therefore, in my mind, it would be like the first time I saw each of my girls after my wife gave birth to them.

There are a plethora of other moments of yūgen that I've been granted throughout my life for which I'm very thankful.  Just yesterday I experienced another one, when I received my passing scores to be certified as a school principal in the State of Texas.  As per James 1:17, "Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows."  I pray that you find moments of yūgen in your lives.  Peace - Shalom - Paz!
